Night stories

Our daughter has been sick for a few days and nights.

She wakes up in the night, crying, in need of being comforted.

I keep the light off, and start to whisper some stories where we are travelling together, incorporating her favourite words of the moment, making us travel into a meditative state that both rock us back to sleep.

Here is one of them, which I hope can rock you back to sleep or invite you to create your own.

The true story of shooting stars

One night, Opal and Mama were having trouble falling asleep, so Mama said to her:

“What if we went on a trip to the stars?”

Opal took Mama’s hand, and the two of them began walking toward the sky, stepping on the big, soft clouds.

They soon found themselves on a beautiful, big, bright shining star and decided to cuddle there.

There, with Mama's back against the star and Opal’s back against Mama, they let themselves be rocked by the star, which, happy to welcome them, swayed with joy.

There, they could see their home, the earth, differently; it was a magnificent explosion of colours. Green was meeting blue, blue was meeting brown, brown was meeting red and red was blurring into white.

There, everything sounded different, everything was lit up differently by the millions of stars around; there, everything was quiet and dreamy.

There, little by little, Mama and Opal’s eyes closed, and they fell into a deep sleep in the starry sky, where other mamas, papas, and kids were also being rocked.

When the star sensed that they were fast asleep, she knew it was time—time to take them back to their beds. So she began to dart across the sky, gently but quickly tucking them under their sheets.

Now, whenever Opal sees a shooting star, she says to Mama:

“Mama, look, a star bringing parents and children back home to sleep.”

And this is the true nature of shooting stars: they bring parents and children back to their beds after helping them fall...
